Audiology

Audiology is the study to identify, diagnose and treat hearing loss in adults and children. With a comprehensive knowledge of the human auditory systems the audiologist diagnoses and ascertains the problem of hearing loss in patients of all ages. He also possesses a thorough knowledge of sound conduction system which is essential to design appropriate hearing aids.

Work Procedure of an Audiologist

The audiologist uses various testing methods to determine whether the person is sensitive to sound. If the subsequent test indicates hearing loss, the audiologist determines the severity of hearing loss and which portion (high, medium or low frequencies) of hearing has been affected. The tests also help in locating the place (outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, auditory nerve and central nervous system) where the hearing loss has occurred. Judging the nature and severity of hearing loss, the audiologist suggests for treatment and rehabilitation using hearing aids and cochlear implants etc.

An audiologist’s role includes but not limited to:

  1. Carrying out complete hearing examinations.
  2. Fitting, adjustment, and maintenance of hearing aids
  3. Providing treatment for tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  4. Conducting hearing and speech rehabilitation programmes

Counselling the patients and their families to deal with child hearing issues and cope with adult hearing loss is an important attribute of an Audiologist. The department has also established a personal and industrial hearing safety programme, newborn hearing screening programme and school hearing screening programme.
